Abstract

Objective To investigate the mediating role of upward social comparison and fear of missing out in the relationship between online social support and problematic social media use.
Methods A total of 534 college students were surveyed with the Online Social Support, Problematic Social Media Use Scale, Upward Social Comparison Scale and Fear of Missing Out Scale.
Results There was a significant positive correlation between four variables: online social support, upward social comparison, fear of missing out, and problematic social media use. The direct effect of online social support on problematic social media use was significant, and the mediating effect of upward social comparison, fear of missing out and the chain mediating effect of “upward social comparison-fear of missing out” on online social support and problematic social media use were also significant.
Conclusion   Online social support not only directly predicts problematic social media use, but also exerts its influences through the indirect paths of upward social comparison and problematic social media use, and the chain mediating path of upward social comparison-fear of missing out.

Key words: Online social support; Problematic social media use; Upward social comparison; Fear of missing out
